In his latest blog, George Moss describes the impact apprentices have had on the Bee Motion Accounting business…
How have your apprentices added value to your business?
Apprentices have shaped the culture and direction of the business. Their fresh thinking has helped challenge existing processes and encouraged better use of technology and automation. An unexpected benefit has been the level of innovation they bring, particularly around digital tools and new ways of working, which has helped keep the business at the forefront of change in the profession.
How does the cost effectiveness of hiring an apprentice compare to traditional hiring in your experience?
Apprenticeships have never been a billable or cost saving exercise for Bee Motion. In reality, they require significant investment in time, mentoring and training. The return is not immediate financial gain but the development of skilled professionals who understand the business, its values and the future direction of the industry. It is a long-term commitment rather than a short-term financial decision.
Have you seen a noticeable impact on team morale or productivity since bringing in apprentices?
There is a strong sense of shared identity across the team because everyone has started their career in the same way. This creates a supportive environment where people are invested in each other’s development. Productivity grows naturally because individuals feel valued and connected to the success of the business rather than simply performing a role.
What is the biggest piece of advice you would give to other businesses considering hiring their first apprentice or using apprenticeships to upskill staff?
Do not view apprenticeships as a cheap labour solution. View them as an investment in people, culture and the future of your industry. When businesses commit properly with time, structure and belief in new talent, the impact goes far beyond filling a vacancy and helps shape a stronger and more sustainable workforce.
