AAT accounting courses — your questions answered

Everything you need to know about studying AAT accounting courses online with Premier Training.

What are AAT accounting courses?

AAT accounting courses are nationally recognised qualifications awarded by the Association of Accounting Technicians. They are available at Level 2 (Certificate in Accounting), Level 3 (Diploma in Accounting) and Level 4 (Diploma in Professional Accounting). Premier Training delivers all three levels as flexible online distance learning courses, allowing you to study at your own pace with expert tutor support throughout.

Which AAT level should I start at?

If you are completely new to accounting, start at Level 2 — it covers all the fundamentals from scratch and requires no prior knowledge. If you have completed Level 2 or have relevant accounting experience, Level 3 is the next step. Level 4 follows Level 3 and leads to MAAT membership and exemptions towards ACCA, CIMA and ICAEW. Use our free skills assessment if you are unsure.

How long do AAT accounting courses take?

Study time varies depending on your pace and hours available each week. Typically: Level 2 takes 6–12 months, Level 3 takes 12–18 months, and Level 4 takes 18–24 months. Because Premier Training courses are fully flexible with no fixed timetable, you study at the pace that suits your work and personal commitments.

How are AAT exams taken?

AAT assessments are computer-based. You can sit them at an AAT-approved assessment centre near you, or in many cases remotely via Premier Training’s remote assessment booking service. You sit each unit assessment when you feel ready after completing the relevant study and mock assessments.

What is included in the course fee?

Your course fee includes: full access to the MyPTA online learning platform, comprehensive study materials for every unit, tutor-marked assignments, mock assessments, a dedicated personal tutor, live and recorded Q&A sessions, and our Pass Promise guarantee. AAT registration and assessment fees are separate (payable directly to AAT).

Do I need any prior experience to study AAT?

No prior accounting knowledge or experience is needed to start the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting. It is designed specifically for complete beginners. For Level 3 you should have completed Level 2 or be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge. Basic numeracy and literacy skills are helpful at all levels.

After Level 2: Accounts Assistant, Bookkeeper, Finance Assistant or Purchase Ledger Clerk. After Level 3: Assistant Accountant, Finance Officer or Payroll Supervisor. After Level 4: Management Accountant, Financial Analyst, Tax Technician or MAAT-designated roles — with the option to gain exemptions and progress to ACCA, CIMA or ICAEW.
