General information AAT Level 1
AAT Access is a new flexible, home study Level 1 accounting qualification launched in January 2011.
Accredited under the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF), it is designed to help less experienced adults and young students(16 - 19) gain the skills and confidence to build a career in business or accountancy. It will also help students who are not ready for Level 2 - this may be because they:
- lack confidence
- speak English as a second language
- prefer more support or a stepped approach to grasp the accounting concepts
The opportunity to develop business skills and grow in confidence will help them to move into the workplace or progress to the Level 2 AAT Accounting Qualification.

Course content AAT Access
The qualification is made up of four skills and knowledge units:
- Mathematics for accounting
- Accounting in a professional environment
- Essential accounting procedures
- Creating business documents

Is the AAT Access level 1 course for me?
Are you interested in a career in accounting but know nothing about the subject? If so, then this course is for you. The AAT Access Level 1 course is an introductory course which will provide you with a firm grounding in the basics of business communication and accountancy. Gaining an accounting qualification with the AAT will open up the doors to a variety of careers within accounting and finance. It will demonstrate to potential employers that you have the practical skills and business knowledge necessary to work in a financial environment. It will also provide you with a professionally recognised and highly respected accounting qualification.
What will I learn?
You will learn the basics of business communication and accounting, which includes developing an understanding of the role of accountants in a business, the different types of business documentation accountants use, ethical behaviour and professionalism within accounting, accounting terminology, together with the numerical skills required for working in accounting. There are 4 units to the course, as detailed below: Mathematics for accounting; Accounting in a professional environment; Essential accounting procedures and Creating business documents.
What are the entry requirements?
There are no formal entry requirements other than a genuine interest in developing your knowledge and understanding of accounting.
How will I be assessed?
At the end of the course you will be assessed to ensure that you can demonstrate the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding required to meet the learning outcomes and objectives for each unit . Assessment will take the form of a formal computer based exam - which you will sit at a centre near your home.
What could I study next?
Successful completion of the AAT Access level 1 course will enable you to progress on to the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting. To qualify as a Member of the Association of Accounting Technicians (MAAT), it is necessary to complete AAT Levels 3 and 4 and to have completed 1 years accounting or financial work experience.
How to book exams:
- Complete the practice exam to a good standard
- Make sure you feel confident and prepared to sit the exam
- Contact your course advisor
- They will then help you locate an exam centre with contact details
- Simply contact the exam centre and book your exam time and day
- At this point you will need to pay the exam fee to the centre
- The exam centre will confirm the time and day via post or email
- Turn up on the day take and pass the exam and receive your results immediately
In the unlikely event you fail your exam you will be able to try again on payment of another exam fee with the centre, Premier Training will continue to support you at no further cost.
On completion you will be presented with a certificate from the AAT that you have successfully completed the level of the course.
